I accompanied the King to a celebration at the Residenz des Botschafters der Vereinigten Staaten. The American Ambassador to Dorstenland invited Jonas to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary. Jonas presented the ambassador with a framed plaque congratulating the U.S. on behalf of the citizens of Dorstenland.
The overcast skies and rain did not prevent the ambassador from providing his guests with a typical American cookout, complete with hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, and corn on the cob.
While Jonas made his way from conversation to conversation with the guests, I was graciously allowed to help manage the barbecue. The planned fireworks display was cancelled due to the weather; however, the ambassador’s wife made sure fireworks were part of the evening. To preserve the holiday spirit, the ambassador’s wife had the televisions in the living room and guest parlor playing recordings of past Fourth of July fireworks displays from across the United States.
After the American feast, I met with the ambassador’s Deputy Chief of Mission. We discussed plans for the King’s non-profit organization, Kronensport gGmbH, to enter the U.S. sporting market.
On a side note, Jonas did not let my expectations down upon our arrival at the ambassador’s residence. The King proudly showed his appetizer plate to anyone who paid him attention. As always, I walked away shaking my head. Damn, Jonas certainly has a knack for finding ways to make me smile.
