Journal Entry 68
01.09.2026
I spent most of the day attending meetings with Jonas and various members of Parliament. To be honest, my thoughts were elsewhere, and it was evident that the King was aware of my inability to remain focused. At times during the discussions and planning sessions, Jonas appeared to take on the roles of both Dorstenland’s King and his own Private Secretary.
On several occasions throughout the day, I would instinctively glance at Jonas. Each time, I found the King looking directly at me. It seems we all possess an instinct that tells us when someone is watching us.
Jonas’s stare did not stir the strange new sensation my body had recently begun experiencing whenever he looked at me. Instead, his eyes seemed soft and filled with genuine concern.
My dearest journal, I truly wish I could be more forthcoming with the King. Damn his ability to understand me—and damn him for giving me the space I need right now.
Oh, how I wish he would grab my shoulders with both hands and ask me, “What the hell is going on?” I love that man, but sometimes his politeness and caring nature need to take a back seat long enough for him to knock some sense into me.
Now that I think about it, would I tell him if he acted in such a way? Would I share the contents of the letter with him? Would I ask the King to help me decipher the cryptic message concealed within the words I burned in front of him?
Not yet.
The first line of the letter obviously refers to Frederick the Great and Katte. But why?
The second line has nothing to do with the two men—or have I overlooked a critical clue?
I have decided to consult the one person, besides Jonas, whom I trust with all my heart.
