Journal Entry 80

28. September 2026

The light rain did not prevent Jonas and me from venturing out for a morning of fishing. We were both unusually silent as we watched the water where our lines had settled.

We drank coffee from our thermoses and ate bread with butter and strawberry jam. Occasionally, our eyes met, and we held each other’s gaze for a moment or two without speaking.

The King and I were frightened. We feared what the cryptic letter’s endgame might hold for the two of us.

Jonas’s security detail appeared to be on high alert at various positions along the lake’s shore. Two of Damien’s men continually scanned the area through binoculars, searching for anything out of place.

Something else caught my attention: Jonas’s fishing rod. Several times, its tip jerked as a fish tugged at the lure.

Jonas did nothing. He only watched.

Then he broke the silence, his voice low and deep.

“We are going back to the cabin now. Once we are inside, put on your hiking gear. Damien and his team will not accompany us. Damien will not like it, but I am Dorstenland’s King, and he has no choice but to obey. Bring your journal. We will decipher Line Four and decide how to move forward.”

“Do you think it is wise for us to go without protection? We do not know what is coming next,” I replied.

“You will do as I say, Ian. Do not argue or attempt to negotiate my instructions.”

I did neither. I simply nodded, reeled in my line, and sat quietly as Jonas steered us back to the dock.

Jonas had never spoken to me quite as he had that morning.

He has taken the helm, and honestly, my dearest journal, I welcome the change.

My King, my best friend, and now my protector.

I am beginning to understand what has changed within me when I look at Jonas.

I do not know why it has taken me so long.
